Pvt. Thomas C. Wanta was assigned to Langley Field, Army Air Base, Langley, VA for basic training.

Tom joined the Medical Detachment at the Station Hospital, Langley Field, VA. and was quickly promoted to Private First Class (Pvc.)

During this time, he applied for Office Candidate School (OCS). There was some question regarding eyesight, which later proved not to be a problem after a review by the Adjutant General's Office on February 4, 1942.

Tom remained at Langley Field for another 15 months.

On February 1, 1943, Tom was promoted to Corporal (Cpl).

This was only a few months before his orders came to ship out. Where was he going? No one was told. For security reasons, the destination was kept secret.
